Julia Fullerton-Batten, a German photographer born in 1970, who lives and works in London, is renowned for her highly cinematic visual storytelling. The significant new event presented by Marcorossi artecontemporanea is a solo exhibition in their galleries in Milan, Turin, and Verona in September 2024, with the collaboration of curator Claudio Composti.
Julia Fullerton-Batten’s artistic projects are based on specific themes, with each image enriched by a narrative story, using true tableaux vivants staged with cinematic lighting techniques. The project presented in the galleries is titled “Old Father Thames,” created by the artist between 2018 and 2024, and it gathers around thirty stories that happened on the Thames over the centuries.
The Thames, says the artist, while not the longest river in the British Isles, has immense significance for British and world history. London would not have existed without the Thames, a source of fresh water and food, a transport and communication artery, but also a physical and psychological boundary. For all these reasons, it is considered a true Father. The Thames is therefore the protagonist of different stories over time, with the artist perfectly reconstructing the environment, costumes, and situations, creating fascinating images that straddle painting, photography, and cinema.
Julia’s use of unusual locations, highly creative settings, and street models are the hallmarks of her style. She infuses visual tension into her images and permeates them with a mystique that induces the viewer to continually re-examine the image; something new comes to the forefront each time.
Her artworks are renowned and exhibited worldwide and have won countless awards. She is often published in photography magazines, is a Hasselblad ambassador, and is a frequent speaker at international workshops and a judge at international competitions. Her images are on the covers of “A Guide to Collecting Contemporary Photography.” Her works are in the permanent collections at the Musee de l’Elysee, Lausanne, the Parliamentary Art Collection, Houses of Parliament, and the National Portrait Gallery, London.
