Julia Fullerton-Batten, a German photographer born in 1970 who lives and works in London, is the artist that Marcorossi artecontemporanea presents in Pietrasanta after her success in 2024 with exhibitions in galleries in Milan, Turin, and Verona, in collaboration with curator Claudio Composti.

Julia Fullerton-Batten’s artistic projects are based on specific themes, where each image is enriched by a narrative story, using true tableaux vivants, staged with cinematic lighting techniques. The project we are presenting is titled Old Father Thames, created by the artist between 2018 and 2024, and it brings together around thirty stories that have taken place on the Thames over the centuries.

The Thames, the artist explains, may not be the longest river in the British Isles, yet it holds immense significance for British and world history. London would not have existed without the Thames, a source of fresh water and food, an artery for transport and communication, but also a physical and psychological boundary. For all these reasons, it is considered a true Father. The Thames has thus been the protagonist of different stories over time, and the artist has meticulously recreated the environment, costumes, and situations, crafting captivating images that merge painting, photography, and cinema.

Julia’s use of unusual locations, highly creative settings, and street-cast models are the hallmarks of her style. She instills visual tension in her images, permeating them with a mystique that compels the viewer to continuously reexamine the scene; something new emerges each time.

Her artworks are renowned and exhibited worldwide, and she has won numerous awards. She is frequently featured in photography magazines, serves as a Hasselblad ambassador, and is a regular speaker at international workshops and a juror for international competitions. Her images appear on the cover of A Guide to Collecting Contemporary Photography. Her work is part of the permanent collections at the Musée de l’Elysée in Lausanne, the Parliamentary Art Collection at the Houses of Parliament, and the National Portrait Gallery in London.
