A new age of innocence
Terracotta is the oldest material in sculpture, and for Theimer it is also the most intimate. In his early years in Paris, after leaving Czechoslovakia in 1968, the artist used it to capture the faces of the people who had remained in his homeland. Today the same material gives shape to a new age of innocence.
The seven busts on show in Verona are unique pieces, each distinct in expression, modelling and decorative detail. As Massimo Bertozzi, author of the critical essay, observes, the faces recall the young Tobias of the biblical story, whom Theimer imagines on his journey borne by two tortoises. The image evokes the motto Festina lente, make haste slowly: the very rule of terracotta, modelled quickly and then slowly dried and fired.
The small votive altar of poetry
Also on view is a large stele, a “small votive altar of poetry”, inhabited by faces, cypresses and the artist’s bestiary: the tortoise, the donkey, the porcupine, the serpent, the dolphins.
Ivan Theimer
Born in Olomouc, Moravia, in 1944, Theimer is one of the great European sculptors of our time. He took part in the Venice Biennale in 1978 and 1982, and in 1996 Václav Havel dedicated a retrospective to him at the Belvedere of Prague Castle. He lives and works between Paris and Monteggiori, in the hills above Pietrasanta.
