Renowned for his conceptual and poetic style, Emiliano Ponzi is considered one of the best illustrators of his  generation. Recently, he felt the need to transform his illustrations, usually digitally created, into large-scale  paintings. This artwork is a painting transposition of an illustration he created for The Washington Post,  documenting his life in Milan during the lockdown in 2020.

Biography: Emiliano Ponzi was born in Reggio Emilia in 1978. He lives and works in New York, USA. As an illustrator and  visual artist, Ponzi has worked for many years in various sectors including publishing (Penguin Books,  Feltrinelli), magazines (The New York Times, The New Yorker, Le Monde, Der Spiegel, Esquire), fashion (Louis  Vuitton, Armani, Bulgari, Gucci), and advertising (Apple, Lavazza, Cartier, Hyundai, Martini, Moleskine,  Airbnb, TIM, Pirelli, Ferrari, MoMA, Triennale Milano). Recently, he has embarked on a new challenge,  deciding to “get his hands dirty” with painting. Among the artists who have inspired him in this transition  from illustration to painting are Lorenzo Mattotti, the way of looking at the image is similar to the  somewhat voyeuristic yet subtle style of Hopper, as well as David Hockney and Alex Katz. His awards include  the Young Guns Award and the coveted Gold Cube from the Art Directors Club of New York, along with  several medals of honor (gold and silver) from the Society of Illustrators in New York. He has written and  illustrated four books: The Journey of the Penguin (2015) for the anniversary of Penguin Books; The Great  New York Subway Map (2017) for MoMA in New York; American West (2018), documenting his journey  through the western United States; and Cronaca dalla Zona Rossa (2020), daily notes on the first lockdown  in Italy.
