Marcorossi artecontemporanea is pleased to present in the Pietrasanta venue the preview of the project that the gallery will dedicate to Arcangelo, in the early months of 2025, in the venues of Milan, Turin and Verona.
On display will be a selection of precious works from the 1990s from the Africa-Terra mia cycle, created by the artist after a trip to Mali, where black, absolute in the works of the 1980s, is still dominant, but also returns to become a sign and to play a role in defining form, leaving the green to construct the temperature of the image. It is the colour of the prairies of West Africa or the green of the forests that cover plains and promontories: a colour made vivid and dazzling by the violence of the African light and the contrasts with the heavy black cuts of the shadows.
The exhibition is completed by a series of canvases and papers from the same period, in which the black is an increasingly graphic sign with a few patches of paint, while the vague traces of colour resemble blue and yellow flashes in a white sky.
My solid roots and sense of total semblance to my homeland have made me free to go further and discover all the lands I have chosen to visit and tell about out of empathy. My works speak of my personal ‘connection’ to things as already experienced through atmospheres close in colour, traditions, songs, legends with my homeland. I am a man deeply rooted in the history of the south, but of the south of the world. It is by virtue of this great strength and awareness that the journey to the African continent, that moving towards a destination, towards something other than oneself, marks a change in Arcangelo’s imagination.
The value of rediscovering a pictorial cycle from the 1990s that has already been historicised, offers new possibilities for interpreting Arcangelo’s art, adding a new piece to the knowledge of his pictorial evolution.
Arcangelo (Arcangelo Esposito) was born in Avellino in 1956. He lives and works between Milan and San Nazzaro, in the province of Benevento. Trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome, he made his debut in the early 1980s in Milan. There followed a period of intense activity in northern Europe, particularly in Germany, where he exhibited over the years in public spaces such as the Galerie der Stadt Esslingen (1987), the Bonner Kunstve-rein (1991) and the Galerie der Stadt Stuttgart (1998). His research is rich in archaic and Mediterranean suggestions and proceeds above all in cycles (Altars, Planets, Mysteries, Towards the East, Samnites) in which his interest in the memory of the cul-tures of ancient peoples reinterpreted in a personal key is expressed through painting and sculpture. His main solo exhibitions include those in public spaces in Italy and abroad, such as the PAC in Milan in 1985, the Galleria Civica in Modena in 1991, the Musée d’Art Moderne in Toulouse in 1992, the MA*GA Museum in Gallarate in 2019, as well as his participation in the Quadriennale Nazionale d’Arte in Rome in 1986 and 1996. In 2015 he was awarded the Bugatti-Segantini prize for his artistic career.
